What a great season for our Senior and Cadette Teams! It culminated this week with all teams competing in the South Dublin League Finals.
Senior and Cadette Girls
The Senior and Cadette Girls both faced Mount Anville in their finals. The Cadette game was intense from the first whistle. Many of the girls had just returned from an excellent school trip to Paris and though tired, their fatigue never showed. The Higgins sisters where key on the offensive end, while team captain Holly Canning was instrumental in defensive causing many turnovers and converting steals into easy scores.
The game remained close throughout with no more that four points separating the teams at any one time. Down the stretch two excellent drives by Kirsten Higgins extended the lead and a final minute fast-break lay-up by Phoebe Otway-Norwood secured the game for St.Columba's.
The Senior Girls faced a very different Mount Anville team than in the regular league. Mt. Anville's 6'4 centre who missed the league game earlier in the year was the difference on the day. Mt. Anville dominated the boards in the first quarter, leaving Columbas stunned and trailing 4-12. The team rallied together in the second quarter and with defensive adjustments closed the deficit to 6 points by the half.
Despite their best efforts the team was unable to break the 6 point margin. They were unlucky as a number of shots fell short and a coupe of great fast break attempts which were not rewarded with a score. Mt. Anville's inside height and rebounding strength proved too strong on the day and the games finishing 33-24 in their favour.
The Senior Boys topped their huge success over Andrews last week with a decisive win over a well coached St. Michael's squad.
Tim Cheng orchestrated the game from the top creating excellent scoring chances and hitting crucial baskets, while Hakon Schug and Sebastian Hillert proved excellent under the boards securing key offensive and defensive rebounds.
St.Michael's remained close for the first quarter, but once Columba's got into their stride, they maintained a comfortable lead to emerge victorious. A great and fitting end to a very successful season.
